Beijing, Britishcourse.com – A Chinese court ordered a man to pay his ex-wife for the housework. On Wednesday (24/2), the man had to pay his ex-wife nearly US $ 8,000 (Rp. 112.6 million).

As reported by AFP, the ex-wife received compensation for domestic work that was not paid for years. The judge handed down the verdict in a divorce case that has sparked heated debate in China.

Under the new civil law, which took effect this year, divorced couples have the right for the first time to seek compensation. This can be done if they take on more responsibilities at home.

To the Beijing court, Wang’s ex-wife said that during the five years of marriage she “looked after the children and took care of the household chores. Meanwhile, her husband, Chen, did not care or participate in other household matters other than going to work.

According to a February 4 court statement, Wang filed a claim for additional compensation for domestic work and child care.

The court found that Wang had indeed taken on more household responsibilities. She must receive 50,000 yuan (US $ 7,700 or Rp. 108 million) plus custody of a single child and an additional 2,000 yuan (Rp. 4.37 million) monthly allowance.

Initially, Wang asked for compensation worth 160,000 yuan (Rp.350 million). But after local media reported this week that Wang’s efforts to appeal the verdict sparked an online debate over the value of unpaid female domestic workers.
