Narrative adalah cerita khayal yang bertujuan menghibur pembaca. Tentu yang namanya cerita khayal itu ya belum tentu keberannya karena bisa jadi itu hanyalah imaginasi atau cerita fiktif yang dibuat oleh seseorang atau cerita buatan sekelompok masyarakat yang tida terbukti kebenarannya. Contoh narrative yaitu, Cinderella, Sangkurian, Snow White, Rabbit and Crocodile, dsb. Untuk penjelasan lebih rinci silahkan baca penjelasan berikut.

Definition of Narrative Text
A narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people (teks narasi adalah cerita imaginatif yang bertujuan menghibur orang).

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

# Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced.(berisi pengenalan tokoh, tempat dan waktu terjadinya cerita (siapa atau apa, kapan dan dimana)

# Complication : Where the problems in the story developed. (Permasalahan muncul / mulai terjadi dan berkembang)

# Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved. Masalah selesai, secara baik “happy ending” ataupun buruk “bad ending”.

# Coda / reorientation (optional) – lesson from the story.

Kadangkala susunan (generic structure) narrative text bisa berisi: Orientation, Complication, Evaluation, Resolution dan Reorientation. Meski “Evaluation” dan “Reorientation” merupakan optional; bisa ditambahkan dan bisa tidak. Evaluation berisi penilaian/evaluasi terhadap jalannya cerita atau konflik. Sedangkan Reorientation berisi penyimpulan isi akhir cerita.

Purpose of Narrative Text
– The Purpose of Narrative Text is to amuse or to entertain the reader with a story.

The Characteristics / Language Feature of Narrative Text:
– Past tense (killed, drunk, etc)
– Adverb of time (Once upun a time, one day, etc)
– Time conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc)
– Specific character. The character of the story is specific, not general. (Cinderella, Snow White, Alibaba, etc)
– Action verbs. A verb that shows an action. (killed, dug, walked, etc)
– Direct speech. It is to make the story lively. (Snow White said,”My name is Snow White). The direct speech uses present tense.

Contoh Narrative Text Fable 1

True Friends

Once upon a time, there were two close friends who were walking through the forest together. They knew that anything dangerous can happen any time in the forest. So they promised each other that they would always be together in any case of danger.

Suddenly, they saw a large bear getting closer toward them. One of them climbed a nearby tree at once. But unfortunately the other one did not know how to climb up the tree. So being led by his common sense, he lay down on the ground breathless and pretended to be a dead man.

The bear came near the one who was lying on the ground. It smelt in his ears, and slowly left the place because the bears do not want to touch the dead creatures. After that, the friend on the tree came down and asked his friend that was on the ground, “Friend, what did the bear whisper into your ears?” The other friend replied, “Just now the bear advised me not to believe a false friend.”

Moral of the Story- A true friend in need is a friend indeed.

Terjemahan

Teman sejati

Suatu hari di masa lau, ada dua teman dekat yang berjalan melewati hutan bersama-sama. Mereka tahu bahwa sesuatu yang berbahaya dapat terjadi setiap saat di hutan. Jadi mereka saling berjanji bahwa mereka akan selalu bersama-sama dalam keadaan bahaya sekalipun.

Tiba-tiba, mereka melihat beruang besar sedang semakin mendekat ke arah mereka. Salah satu dari mereka memanjat pohon terdekat seketika. Tetapi sayangnya satu yang lainnya tidak tahu bagaimana cara untuk memanjat pohon. Jadi terdorong oleh akal sehatnya, ia berbaring di tanah, menahan napas, dan berpura-pura menjadi orang yang sudah mati.

Beruang itu datang mendekati orang yang sedang berbaring di tanah tersebut. Mencium di telinganya, dan perlahan-lahan meninggalkan tempat karena beruang tidak ingin menyentuh makhluk yang sudah mati. Setelah itu, teman di pohon turun dan bertanya ke pada temannya yang berbaring di tanah itu, ” Teman , apa yang beruang bisikan ke telingamu ? ” Teman lain menjawab, “Tadi beruang itu menyarankan saya untuk tidak mempercayai teman palsu.”

Pesan Moral dari cerita – Seorang teman sejati yang kita butuhkan adalah teman yang sebenarnya.

Contoh Narrative Text Fable 2

A Hungry Crocodile

Orientation
One day, there was a hungry crocodile waiting a prey near the lake in the jungle. That crocodile hiding under the surface of the lake for a long time, but there was not yet any prey approaching that lake to drink. That crocodile was so cruel and thus it had no friend and the other animals hate it so much.

Complication
At the afternoon, the crocodile could not stay any longer to the lake. It finally walked to the ground. But that day was unlucky day for that crocodile. After getting at the bank of the lake suddenly there was a big branch of the tree falling upon its neck. The crocodile could not move at all.

Not long after the falling branch, finally there was a buffalo coming to the lake to drink. The buffalo saw the crocodile and the buffalo was afraid and would leave that lake soon. But the crocodile asked it sadly to help. The buffalo felt sad about it and decided to help the crocodile. But after helping the crocodile, the buffalo got something unexpected. The crocodile bit the buffalo’s leg and the buffalo shouted loudly asking help for any other animal near it.

Kancil that was at the way to go to the Lake heard the buffalo’s voice. Kancil run quickly to see what had happened to the buffalo. Near the lake, kancil saw the buffalo and the crocodile.

Kancil asked: “what happened?”
And the buffalo answered: “the crocodile bite my leg after I help to remove the big branch from its neck”.
The crocodile also said: “I’m hungry and you are at my territory, therefore I bit you poor buffalo.”
The crocodile laughed at the buffalo.
Kancil said to buffalo, “It is impossible you had helped the crocodile, thus the crocodile had the right to bite you.”
The buffalo said, “I’m not telling a lie. I can prove it.”
Kancil said, “I believe that crocodile is right, but then you can try to prove your telling. But first crocodile must release your bite, okay?”
Crocodile said, “Okay, it is easy, but after that I will eat the buffalo.”
Kancil said, “Okay, deal.”

Resolution
The buffalo laid the big branch at the former position, upon the crocodile’s neck. After that suddenly kancil said, “Lets run buffalo, lets run!”
The buffalo and kancil run as fast as possible and the crocodile had realized that it is had been fooled by kancil.
The crocodile was still trapped there and there was no one helped it.

Terjemahan Contoh Narrative Text

Buaya yang Lapar

Orientasi
Suatu hari, ada seekor buaya kelaparan sedang menunggu mangsa di dekat danau di dalam hutan. Buaya itu bersembunyi di bawah permukaan air danau dalam waktu yang lama, namun belum juga ada seekor mangsapun mendekati danau untuk minum. Buaya itu sangatlah jahat dan oleh karena itulah ia tidak memiliki teman dan binatang lainpun sangat membencinya.

Komplikasi
Setelah hari menjelang sore, buaya tersebut tak tahan berendam di dalam air. Akhirnya buaya itu merayap ke tanah. Namun hari itu sungguh hari yang sial bagi buaya. Setelah mencapai tepi danau tiba-tiba sebuah batang pohon berukuran besar jatuh tepat di leher buaya. Buaya itu tidak bisa bergerak sama sekali.

Tak lama kemudian, akhirnya datanglah seekor kerbau ke danau itu untuk minum. Kerbau itu melihat buaya dan langsung ketakutan serta hendak meninggalkan danau itu secepatnya. Namun buaya itu memelas memohon pertolongan. Kerbau merasa kasian pada buaya itu dan akhirnya memutuskan untuk menolongnya. Namun setelah menolong buaya tersebut, kerbau itu mendapatkan sesuatu yang tak ia harapkan. Buaya itu menggigit salah satu kaki kerbau dan kerbau itu berteriak lantang minta tolong kepada binatang lain di sekitar danau tersebut.

Kancil yang pada saat itu sedang berjalan menuju danau mendengar suara kerbau. Kancil berlari secepatnya untuk melihat apa yang telah dialami oleh kerbau.

Sesampainya di dekat danau, kancil melihat kerbau dan buaya.

Lalu kancil bertanya, “Ada apa ini?”
Dan kerbau menjawab, “buaya ini menggigit kakiku setelah aku menolongnya menyingkirkan dahan pohon yang menjatuhi lehernya.”
Buaya itu berkata, “Aku lapar dan kamu berada di wilayahku, maka aku menggigitmu kerbau yang malang.”
Buaya itu menertawakan kerbau.
Kancil berkata kepada kerbau, “Tak mungkin kamu membantu buaya, maka buaya punya hak untuk menggigitmu.”
Kerbau itu berkata, “Aku tidak berbohong. Aku bisa membuktikannya.”
Kancil berkata, “Aku percaya buaya benar, namun kamu boleh saja mencoba membuktikan omonganmu. Tapi sebelumnya, buaya harus melepaskan gigitanmu, oke?”
Buaya berkata, “Oke, itu gampang, tapi setelah itu aku akan memakan kerbau.”
Kancil berkata, “Oke, sepakat.”

Resolusi
Kerbau menaruh dahan besar itu pada posisi semula, di atas leher buaya. Setelah itu tiba-tiba kancil berkata, “Lari kerbau, ayo cepat lari!”
Kerbau dan kancil lari secepat mungkin dan buaya baru sadar kalau ia baru saja dibodohi oleh kancil.
Buaya itu tetap terjebak di sana dan tak ada yang mau menolongnya.
